Mark lives in Canberra and first came to attention as a poet when his poems won the Poetry Australia Biennial International Prize in 1973 and 1975. This early work drew attention to Australia's neglected tropics and prompted poet Les Murray to dub him "the man with a Muse a thousand miles long." After spending four years in Europe, Mark returned to Australia and since 1982 has pursued his belief that Australians should "find words for the places, the experiences, the people, and the things that move us". In addition to his environmental interest, Mark has also pursued his interest in human culture, art and biology through his poetry. He has collaborated with a number of photographers to produce a series of poetry and picture books about key regions in Australia. Mark was awarded an Australia Council Fellowship to write about the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. |
